A NEW RAF-themed Merrick School Education and Training Centre will be officially opened in Dumfries next month.

The centre is aimed at helping children and young people from challenging backgrounds.
Squadron Leader Nobby Clark will formally open the new Dumfries education and training centre for Common Thread Schools at the Catherinefield Industrial Estate on Friday August 21.
The new school has approved capacity for 18 young people and will serve the Dumfries and Galloway area for both day and residential pupils.
Previously situated near Thornhill, the new education and training centre will be a state-of-the-art facility, centrally located, and will provide a peaceful, nurturing and safe schooling environment for young people who have become detached from mainstream education.

The school is equipped to provide a full broad general education curriculum from primary to S3 and National Qualifications up to National 4.
The children and young people who attend Merrick Schools come from a variety of backgrounds and are all generally disengaged from school and not attending regularly.
Kieron O`Brien, executive head of education, Common Thread Group, said: “Each young person receives a bespoke and unique learning programme that is evaluated and revised on a regular basis.
“Education and care staff interact to ensure the best outcomes are achieved for each young person.”
Common Thread now run 11 residential homes and three Merrick Schools in Dumfries and Galloway, the Central Belt and the Highlands.
