Council work is boosting local businesses

DUMFRIES and Galloway Council’s ‘significant’ achievements in procurement activities over the last year have been highlighted.

The Procurement Annual Report for the financial year 2023/24 has been shared with councillors and reveals a strong emphasis on supporting local businesses and fostering economic growth within the region.

One of the standout initiatives was the highly successful ‘Meet The Buyer’ events. These events provided a platform for local businesses to engage directly with the council, gaining insights into upcoming contract opportunities and establishing helpful connections. It facilitated greater access to council contracts and strengthened the local economy by encouraging more businesses to participate in the procurement process.

Over the year, the council invested approximately £235 million in essential goods, services and works to support the delivery of vital public services and infrastructure across the region. Of this, 41 per cent was awarded to suppliers based in Dumfries and Galloway, reinforcing the council’s commitment to prioritising local businesses and driving economic growth within the community.

Commenting, Cllr Ivor Hyslop said: “The ‘Meet The Buyer’ events have been a game-changer for our local businesses. By providing direct access to council contract opportunities, we are empowering our local enterprises to thrive and contribute to the region’s economic growth. This initiative reflects our dedication to fostering a vibrant and inclusive local economy.”

Cllr Richard Marsh added: “Our procurement processes are designed to support and uplift local businesses. The significant increase in local supplier engagement and the positive feedback from the business community are testaments to the success of our efforts. We will continue to build on this momentum to ensure that our procurement activities benefit the entire region.”
