Residents vote against windfarm plan

OVER 100 residents turned out last Monday night in Newton Stewart to give their views about windfarm proposals in the area.

Cree Valley Community Council (CVCC) called the meeting to gather the community’s view about two proposals: the Glenvernoch windfarm put forward by Energiekontor UK Ltd, which would consist of 13 x 200 metre tall turbines; and the Blair Hill scheme of 22 turbines just outside of Newton Stewart.

The three hour long meeting at MacMillan Hall gave residents the chance to voice their opinions about each scheme before being polled. Of the 105 people who voted, ten votes were invalid as they came from non-residents. From the remaining 95 votes, 88 were against one or both of the proposed windfarms, whilst only three votes were in favour and two remained undecided

Commenting on the meeting, CVCC chair Stephon Bishop said: “Firstly, thank you to all the people who turned out to register their views. It was a very informative evening.

“Also, thank you to all the community councillors that came along and helped make sure the meeting ran smoothly.

“Huge thank you to Newton Stewart Cinema for providing the PA system and mikes.

“The CVCC will use the data plus the views expressed on the night and in the emails sent to form our response to the Energy Consents Unit for the Glenvernoch application.”
