BUSINESSES across Dumfries and Galloway are increasingly seeking advice on redundancies as the reality of the 2024 Budget becomes apparent, according to an experienced HR consultant.
Helen Dawson, owner of Dawson Kaveney HR in Carlisle, is reporting a sharp rise in enquiries from companies in this region which are grappling with the looming financial impact coming soon this year.
The changes, announced in October by the UK Government, will see increases to National Insurance contributions and the National Minimum Wage from 1st April 2025.
Commenting, Helen this week said: “The changes set out in the Budget are already putting a lot of pressure on local businesses. Many are having to make tough decisions around workforce planning.
“For many businesses, these measures have come as a shock. Some are telling me they have no choice but to cut hours or make staff redundant to balance the books. These are tough decisions, but employers are doing this to ensure stability for the rest of their workforce.”
And she believes that many business owners feel conflicted about the changes, saying: “Businesses want to pay a fair wage and support their staff, but they’re facing an immediate and direct impact on their finances, at relatively short, five-six-month notice.
“Knee-jerk decisions can have unintended consequences, and businesses need to think about how these choices fit into their future plans. Take the time to assess your options. It’s always worth seeking advice to make sure you’re making the best decision.”
