Let’s snap away-day hoodoo!

QUEEN of the South gaffer Peter Murphy wants his troops to forget about their horrendous away form so far this season as they travel to Alloa Athletic this weekend.

It’s fair to say the Doonhamers’ Achilles heel has been their away outings. In Queens’ nine away matches they have only picked up two points and only netted twice.

And Murphy knows his side will need to snap the away-day hoodoo if Queens want to challenge up the top of the table.

He said: “It’s going to be a tough match against Alloa as last time out they got a positive result against league leaders Arbroath.

“With how physical and aggressive we were in our press and working as a team last week, it was much better than some of our away games. So we’ll be wanting to do the same as that.

“We need to maintain this little run we’re on. It’s one defeat in four but let’s make it one in five. We’ll do everything we can to do so.

“We’ll look to go there, enjoy ourselves and try to forget about our away form so far this season and do what we know we can do.”

And the Queens chief believes the team can take encouragement from last week’s slim 1-0 victory over Cove Rangers.

Mikey Hewitt’s first half strike proved to be the difference at a foggy Palmerston.

FOGGY . . . not ideal weather conditions

And Murphy admits it was a marked improvement from the derby two weeks ago.

Murphy said: “I thought it was an outstanding performance. There was a response from how disappointed we were with the second half in the Annan match.

“We played really good football and our set pieces were excellent thanks to brilliant deliveries from Kyle Doherty.

“Lately in the second periods of games we haven’t managed them well but we did that against Cove.

“I thought we got right at Cove and limited them with the way we worked and pressed. We forced them into long balls.

“The win keeps our home form going along nicely.”

Meanwhile, Murphy confirmed that loan striker Zander Craik has returned to parent club Kilmarnock whilst he has hinted they are looking to bring in at least “two or three” new faces.

He added: “The window has just opened and it just depends on the clubs we speak to.They maybe need to get one in before one goes out.

“We’re doing a bit of work and we’re looking to bring two or three in, maybe more. This could impact some of the players already here.

“Zander has fallen foul in that he got injured and we signed two strikers after that.

“We felt Zander’s opportunities would be restricted so we had a conversation with Kilmarnock and they are happy enough to bring him back.

“Hopefully he gets out on loan somewhere else and plays a lot of games because he wouldn’t have here.”
