Woodland stay away warning

OVER 50 trees in Corrie Wood have been classified as ‘dangerous’, and the public are being asked to avoid the area.

The area, on the edge of Lockerbie, is owned by Dumfries and Galloway Council as part of the town’s common good, but 51 trees within the plantation have become structurally unstable and are a risk to residents and visitors.

A public notice released by the council on Wednesday stated: “Dumfries and Galloway Council is the owner of Corrie Wood. The area forms part of the common good. 51 trees in Corrie Wood have been assessed as dangerous. Please do not enter any part of the wood as there is a risk to your safety.”

The matter was discussed at Tuesday’s meeting of Lockerbie and District Community Council. However, some community councillors are sceptical that the public will heed the warning. Member Doreen Jenkins said: “You can try and keep the kids out of that wood, but it’s likely.”

It is unclear if Dumfries and Galloway Council intend to fell the dangerous trees, as previous works have seen the removal of damaged and diseased ones which it was felt presented an immediate risk.
