TOO many children are still being forced to live in temporary accommodation in Dumfries and Galloway, according to Colin Smyth MSP.
New homelessness figures released this week show as of September 30 2024, 70 children in this region were living in temporary accommodation.
Overall, 260 households were in temporary accommodation in Dumfries and Galloway, the highest figure in the past couple of years.
Colin Smyth said: “These figures must be a wake up call for the Scottish Government. Too many children in our region are being forced to live in temporary accommodation and it really shows the scale of the homelessness crisis facing our region.
“The level of homelessness in Dumfries and Galloway was already some of the highest in Scotland and these figures show a rise compared to the same period the previous year, with local services struggling to provide support.
“We have seen cases of families being placed in caravans because there is a shortage of temporary accommodation never mind permanent homes.
“We need urgent action to tackle this crisis and make sure every Scot has a safe and secure home to call their own, including a fair deal for local government and a plan to boost housebuilding.”
