STARRING ROLES . . . Cornet elect Hayden Hodgson with Lass hopefuls Kayleigh Murray, left, and Kayleigh Murdoch

Kayleigh Murray and Kayleigh Murdoch have both filled out application forms for the role of Cornet’s Lass.

And members of the public will head to The Anglers next Friday to vote for their preferred candidate.

Kayleigh Murray is hoping to make it third time lucky in 2025 as she bids again for one of the coveted principal positions.

The 22-year-old, who works at a horse yard in Carrutherstown, has taken part in the festivities since her early teenage years.

She said: “Hopefully it will be third time lucky!

“It would mean everything to me. It’s been a dream of mine since I was a little girl.

“Ever since I started riding the marches I have always thought about being at the front of the cavalcade.”

Meanwhile, Kayleigh Murdoch has also put her name in the hat ahead of the vote next Friday night.

Annan Riding of the Marches is quite the family affair for the 21-year-old dairy worker.

Kayleigh said: “It’s been in the family for years. My papa used to be on the committee and my dad, Andrew Murdoch, was Standard Bearer in 1987 and Cornet in 1993. My nana was also on the crowning committee.
“It would mean quite a lot and it would make my family proud.”

AROM vice convener George Campbell said: “Having two girls applying for the role of Cornet’s Lass cements that we still have a great deal of interest in people wishing to represent their town in our historic celebrations, and I would urge the townspeople to turn out in force and support their chosen candidate.”

Voting will take place at The Anglers, Annan, on Friday February 14 between 3 pm and 7 pm. Anyone aged 18 and over can vote and there are no boundary limits.

The Standard Bearer elect will be announced at the same time as the election result.
