Horseball is heading our way

A NEW sport is coming to Dumfries and Galloway in July 2025.

A mix of rugby and basketball, Horseball is leading the latest sporting phenomenon.

Each team consists of four players on horseback, who must complete three passes before scoring a goal in a hoop positioned nearly four metres off the ground at either end of the pitch.

Based in England, the British Horseball Association is bringing the sport to Scotland to share its passion for the game, says Jenny Hughes, administrator and head of sports development at the British Horseball Association.

In July, two coaches will travel across Scotland to host clinics and information sessions.

And people can test their skills locally at Nithsdale Pony Club at the Barony Campus, Dumfries on Saturday July 12. The timing of the clinics will be announced closer to the event.

“Hopefully the popularity of horseball in each area will grow and then there’ll be a basis for a few players that are playing here and there, and the ultimate goal is that clubs and teams will form around Scotland and it will actually become a sport that is that is being played in Scotland,” said Jenny

The British Horseball Association is eager to introduce the sport to new audiences. Jenny says that once people try it, they become hooked. The opportunity to expand allows players across the UK to connect and develop the sport together.

As horseball gains traction, Jenny highlights the strong sense of camaraderie among players. Despite competing on different teams, everyone involved supports and encourages one another.

More information about the sport can be found on the British Horseball Association website or Horse Scotland’s Facebook page. Further details regarding the July Scotland tour are also available.
