Apathy outcry

LOCKERBIE residents have been slammed for their 'apathy' following extensive consultation by Scottish Power.

Lockerbie Community Council chairwoman Jan Andrews says she was disgusted to learn that no one attended any of the events organised to inform Lockerbie residents of the plans to upgrade lines and the associated work and potential disruption.
Speaking at last week’s Lockerbie Community Council meeting, secretary Doreen Jenkins explained the lengths the energy provider went to, including giving a presentation at one of the monthly meetings organised by the group.
She said: “Scottish Power sent out 600 letters, held a session with tea and coffee provided and not one single person turned up.
“It just goes to show the sheer apathy.
“We actually asked them, on behalf of the community, for that to be done and no one went along.”
After the meeting she said: “I spoke to Scottish Power because I hadn’t heard from them about how the consultation went.
“I couldn’t believe it.”
And responding to the information chairwoman Jan Andrews said: “They went to all that effort, they came here and gave that presentation.
“It’s disgusting to hear that there was nobody at all went along.”
However, the role of the community council has been praised by a ward member.
Annandale north councillor Stephen Thompson said: “I think the community council should be commended for taking the right course of action to ensure people had a chance.”
Scottish Power were working in the town for over two weeks upgrading lines.
In that time hundreds of houses across Lockerbie were left without power for hours at a time.
