Volunteers ready to help out with problem car park

Historically, the car park at the John Bell Playing Field was locked on a daily basis by the Hecklegirth school janitor.

But, a lack of council resources means this is no longer possible and the gate has since been left unlocked.

Last November residents got in touch with this paper to tell of persistent anti-social behaviour issues occurring in the area at night due to vehicles being able to access the area.

After attending a meeting in January, residents have now volunteered to assist with the daily locking of the gate.

At next Wednesday’s Annan Common Good Fund sub committee meeting, members will be asked to agree that the volunteers are permitted to open and close the gate for a trial period of six months.

The John Bell Playing Field was gifted to the Royal Burgh of Annan in 1951 by Mr John Hart Bell to be used as a public park and playing field.

Annan Common Good Fund sub committee previously agreed

that a section of the grounds would be converted into a hard standing area that would be used as a car parking facility.
