‘It’s getting dangerous’

Annan community councillor Jim Thorburn raised the issue at the group’s meeting on Monday night. He reckons someone is going to get hurt unless action is taken.

The astroturf pitches at Annan Athletic are heavily utilised by local sports clubs in the evening throughout the week.

As a result, chaos ensues on North Street during pick-up and drop-off times.

Jim said: “Folk are parking everywhere, it’s ridiculous. Something’s going to have to be done about it as it’s getting dangerous.

“Could we not try and stagger start times?

“I felt like I was going to get knocked down. I’ve noticed lately that it’s getting worse.

“It’s something that we have to look at, I’m genuinely wondering what it’s going to take.

“I’m not blaming any one group or one person, but we are going to have to have a look at it.”

Previous dialogue has taken place between the club, Dumfries and Galloway Council and Police Scotland.

It is understood staggered start times are not possible due to volunteers’ working hours and that double yellow lines are not a favourable option either.

Annandale South ward officer Jaime Nicholson said: “We have had lots and lots of meetings to try and sort it. There’s just no easy solution.”

Annan Athletic have urged drivers to park responsibly and, where possible, take up active travel options when coming to Galabank.

A club spokesperson this week said: “Annan Athletic Football Club acknowledges that parking on North Street in Annan can be an issue at certain times.

“We take road safety seriously and have proactively engaged with facility users to raise awareness and encourage responsible parking.

“We continue to promote active travel options and remind visitors to use the main car park at the top of the MUGA whenever possible.

“We urge anyone using the facility and visitors to park responsibly and consider the impact on local residents and road users.

“We appreciate the cooperation of everyone in helping to ensure a safe and accessible environment for all.”
