Community garden concerns

CONCERNS about Lochmaben’s Community Gardens have been raised.

Burgh community councillor Jane Purdie questioned community involvement, the lack of inclusive flower beds and the cost and design of the raised beds.

She said: “There doesn’t seem to be a lot of community involvement in the gardens.

“There hasn’t been any announcements about the funding they’ve received and how they are spending it.

“This is a community project. Also, there was a remit that if you are going to change the remit of the gardens you need to ask the community.

“I don’t think the beds are inclusive. We’ve had people around Lochmaben asking what is happening with the community garden. I do have concerns.”

At last week’s meeting, community garden members claimed the work was for larger beds and the work done was “sturdier”.

In the community council’s draft minutes, it states that Jaybees and RH Youth Organisation “supported the garden’s previous season and further beds suitable for wheelchairs will be built in the near future”.

Also, it reads that funding updates will be shared with the community as the growing season begins and events take place.
