Vinnie praises ‘ruthless’ Gretna

GRETNA 2008 manager Vinnie Parker praised his team following their ‘best performance of the season’ last Saturday when they trounced Broxburn 6-1 away from home.

Errol Douglas swept the ball home for the hosts in the 17th minute, but little did they know how the next 73 minutes would pan out.

The Anvils had overturned the scoreline to 3-1 by halftime.

Iain Anderson hit a brace, with a header and a smart prodded finish, and Jordan Holt also fired the ball high into net from close range.

They added three more goals in the second period.

Dean Brotherston was on hand at the back post to poke the ball home five minutes after the restart, Stuart Douglas powered home a header just after the hour and Holt slotted home late on to make it six and round off the scoring.

Speaking to club media, Parker said: “It’s the first time we’ve come back from being a goal down and gone on to win the game.

“We’re always harping on about getting the first goal. In the past two weeks we’ve been a goal down and come back – it shows great character.

“That’s been our best performance this season, it was flawless. There were some exceptional performances and I thought the lads were magnificent.

“They’re a very good side, I think they’ve got the third best home record in the league. We took our chances.

“I think every chance we created we scored. You don’t get many chances in this league. The ones we created today were through hard work and some great passages of play.

“We were ruthless in front of goal and it was great to see.

“Everybody was brilliant.”

The Anvils have their third away win on the spin this Saturday as they make the journey to Cowdenbeath.

Parker added: “Cowdenbeath is probably going to be a different game like Berwick (in the previous week).

“But the boys have shown they can adapt. We will probably have to dig deep next week as it will be a bit more of a war.

“On our day I think we can beat anybody. I’m sure it will be another decent game.”
