Striker Ryan Hardie scored the only goal for Championship outfit Plymouth Argyle as they dumped heavy hitters Liverpool, of the Premier League, out of the coveted competition on Sunday February 9.

Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Finlay Carson lodged a motion to celebrate Ryan’s achievement.

It said: “The Parliament congratulates the footballer, Ryan Hardie, from Stranraer, who caused one of the biggest upsets in FA Cup history when his penalty kick sensationally knocked Liverpool out of the 2024-25 tournament and allowed his English Championship team, Plymouth Argyle, to progress to the next round; recognises Ryan began his career at Rangers, before being loaned to Raith Rovers, St Mirren and Livingston, and eventually moved to Blackpool before a three-year contract with Plymouth, where he was the club’s top goal scorer in League One in 2022-23, and wishes Ryan continued success in the FA Cup and with helping Argyle as the team try to avoid relegation.”

The 27-year-old, who was born in the Wigtownshire town, netted his penalty eight minutes into the second half of the fixture.

He made the move to Devon to join the Pilgrims in 2021, following spells with Blackpool and a number of loans after coming through the academy set-up at Rangers.

Wigtownshire curler Robyn Munro was also recognised by the MSP thanks to her exploits on the ice.

Robyn swept up at the recent Scottish Women’s Curling Championship – winning her first-ever title.

She was part of Team Henderson playing at Dumfries Ice Bowl when she triumphed in the national title.

Her success comes after she won a gold medal in the mixed doubles event at the International University Sports Federation Winter World University Games in Turin, Italy.

Mr Carson said: “I am absolutely thrilled that Robyn is thriving in the sport and was more than happy to record her success with the Scottish Parliament.

“I have known Robyn and her family for many, many years and have previously lodged motions regarding their achievements both internationally and nationally.

“Robyn comes from a strong curling dynasty from Wigtownshire starting with her uncle Hammy McMillan, who won the 1999 World Championships, followed by her cousins Hammy McMillan junior and Grant Hardie, who won the 2023 World Championships.

“Of course, Robyn’s mother Gail Munro won silver at the European Championship as well as a Scottish title, not forgetting her dedication and commitment to curling saw her receive an MBE in the New Years Honours List.”
