Sainsbury's announcement welcomed

PLANS by supermarket giant Sainsbury’s to open a new store in Dumfries have been welcomed by local constituency MSP Finlay Carson.

Speaking after news of the bid emerged, Mr Carson said: “In this day and age any new potential jobs boost to the area has to be welcomed and supported.

“Not only does the move represent a vote of confidence in the area but fill a significant void at the retail park by attracting new customers.”

Sainsbury’s has submitted an application to modify restrictions on the building that currently limit sales to only non-food bulky goods in a move designed to protect the town centre.

The supermarket insists that if it is given the go-ahead it could “enhance convenience for shoppers, foster healthy competition, increase consumer choice, and contribute positively to the local economy.”

Last summer the company announced expansion plans to open several new supermarkets at a variety of locations across Scotland, England and Northern Ireland.

It believes its investment at Dumfries would generate around 100 new, full and part-time jobs and could be open later this year.
