Praise for free book scheme

A Locharbriggs mum is praising a free book scheme for helping her two-year-old daughter develop a love of reading in the spirit of World Book Day.

World Book Day is today, and the Wheatley Foundation is continuing its work to support young readers. The foundation already distributed over 40,000 books to 1861 children under five years old in the surrounding communities.

Leigh Stewart, 41, says the Imagination Library programme, run by the Wheatley Foundation in partnership with Dolly Parton’s charity, has become an important part of her daughter Callie’s daily routine.

“I read one to her every night. it’s our bedtime routine,” said Leigh, above. “She also loves a story during the day. Her favourite is My World, Your World by Melanie Walsh.”

Callie is one of 300 children in Wheatley Homes South properties receiving books each month through the scheme. Other areas a part of this programme include Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Dumfries and Galloway.

“It’s a great way for parents to bond with their children and teach them about the world, their culture and the culture of others,” said Professor Paddy Gray OBE, chair of Wheatley Foundation.

For Leigh and Callie, the scheme has already made a lasting impact: “Callie gets really excited when she gets her book every month. She’s a clever wee thing and she really looks forward to having a new story read to her,” said her mum.

Those interested in registering their child can speak with their local housing officer.
