Kirkbean Primary land sale mooted

DUMFRIES and Galloway Council is set to cash in on land at a primary school that was closed last year.

The 2165 sq m piece of land to the rear of Kirkbean Primary was first made surplus to requirements by council education chiefs nearly ten years ago.

A local resident contacted the council two years ago, hoping to purchase it.

The matter was due to be discussed by councillors at Nithsdale area committee on Wednesday.

A report on the matter reads: “In 2023, Dumfries and Galloway Council was approached by a local Kirkbean resident whose property borders the primary school to enquire about the possibility of purchasing the surplus land and thereafter maintaining it.

“The process of disposal, including local community consultation, has been explained to the local resident and they remain keen to purchase the surplus land.

“By disposing of the land at Kirkbean Primary School, the council will look to maximise any capital receipt gained through the sale of the land and reduce any continuing ongoing revenue to the council.”

Kirkbean Community Council was consulted on the situation and confirmed it had no interest in the surplus site.

Kirkbean Primary shut its doors last summer after parents made the decision to mothball it due to the projected school roll being low. The historic building – which first opened its doors in 1860 – was in line to have its future sustainability assessed by Dumfries and Galloway Council over the next academic year.

At Nithsdale area committee, councillors will share their views on the potential sale. However, this is only the first step in an extended process before it can be finally signed off.
