RAPISTS in Nithsdale have nowhere to hide as a police crackdown on the sex offenders has delivered exceptional results.
A new police report confirmed that there were 12 reported rapes in this part of the region in the six-months between April 1 and September 30 last year.
And police chiefs have revealed that there has been a remarkable detection rate of 125 percent.
This means that all the accused rapists were tracked down – along with additional sex offenders from the previous year too.
These crime stats form part of a police performance report that it is was discussed at Nithsdale area committee on Wednesday.
Police Chief Inspector Duncan Cameron attended the meeting to present the report and answer queries from councillors.
The report states: “Crimes of rape have increased by one on the previous year to date and are three crimes less than the five year average.
“The rape detection rate is 125 percent, 88.6 percentage points more than the previous year to date and 69.4 percentage points higher than the five year average.
“Detection rates above 100 percent occur when crimes recorded in a previous reporting period are subsequently detected.”
A further 40 sexual assaults were recorded in Nithsdale between April 1 and September 30 last year, which is two less than the same period the previous year and also the five-year average.
Meanwhile, domestic abuse – of both women and men – is on the decrease in Nithsdale.
The police stats show that there were 18 cases of domestic abuse against women in this part of the region in the first six months of last year – down from 22 incidents the previous year.
Meanwhile, there were no reported cases of domestic abuse by men during this period – despite there being two reported cases in the district in the same timeframe during 2023/24.
