Highest council salaries revealed

THE salaries of the highest paid officials at Dumfries and Galloway Council have been revealed.

For the 2023-24 year, the chief executive led the way on £163,796, with a pension of £35,966, plus expenses, giving her a total remuneration of £200,244.

This compared to £172,153 paid to the UK Prime Minister and £176,780 for Scotland’s First Minister in the same period- not accounting for their pensions.

Meanwhile, five other directors at the region’s local authority also earned over £100,000 last year.

They were the director of education; the director of economy and resources; the communities director, who was also interim chief executive for a period – and they were all on £124,777.

And the heads of social work and education took home about £107,000 each.

Annual pensions for the quintet ranged from £22,730 up to £27,399.

In addition, the heads of finance and procurement, and governance and assurance both earned £98,349, rising to £120,000 when their pensions were included.

The numbers are all included in the 19th annual Town Hall Rich List produced by the Taxpayers Alliance.

Each year the group compiles a list of all local authority employees nationwide receiving a total remuneration of more than £100,000.

Their report for last year also reveals that Dumfries and Galloway Council’s top earners have this year seen their salaries rise by between £6000 and £7000.

The Taxpayers Alliance also note that the number of such employees nationally has risen to the highest recorded level.
