Changes in car colours

SEEING cream, turquoise, pink, orange, and brown cars on the road could soon be a distant memory, according to new research from Heritage Car Insurance.

The insurance company acquired DVLA registration data from an FOI request to find these colours disappearing in popularity. The company predicts the shades will be phased out starting this year, with the idea of total elimination by 2033.

While these five are losing popularity, data revealed that 68 per cent of new car registrations are for grey, black, and white cars. The common, modern look is becoming one of uniformity on the road – with many drivers saying everything looks the same.

“British roads are losing their colour, and drivers are starting to take notice. As manufacturers focus on neutral shades like grey, black, and white, the variety that once made the streets more vibrant is fading fast. Prioritising mass-market appeal and resale value over individuality, carmakers are producing increasingly uniform designs, with once-distinctive brand colours disappearing and cars looking more alike than ever,” said Mark Wilkinson, managing director at Heritage Car Insurance.

Wilkinson is encouraging those seeking unique vehicles to travel back in time to classic cars. He says not only the colour, but also the design breaks away from the standard of cars today.

With 59 per cent of people saying they are disappointed in today’s cars’ vibrance, it can also pose a dangerous threat. The study also found that one in six said the monotone hues made them feel less alert while on the road.

As brands are starting to lose their identities, falling into the modern trends, people may be turning to vintage cars as a solution- above – With an almost six per cent increase in historic cars on the road, some old classics could travel through time and become the next hit.
