Behind the scenes at uni labs

THREE students from Dumfries Academy visited the University of Glasgow’s School of Chemistry.

Advanced Higher biology and chemistry pupils Erin, Callie and Arwen spent the day in the labs, getting to use some of their state-of-the-art equipment: Erin carried out IR spectroscopy on aspirin samples she synthesised through her Advanced Higher chemistry project.

The trio were also given a ‘brilliant tour’ of three research labs, meeting staff including Professor Justin Hargreaves, head of the School of Chemistry, and Rowan Brydson, former Dumfries Academy pupil. Rowan shared some insights into her journey as a PhD student, highlighting the passion and patience involved in academic research.

The day concluded with a visit to the Hunterian Museum and its interesting medical and historical exhibits.

The school said: “We are looking forward to continued links with the University of Glasgow; we were made to feel very welcome.”
