School hosts Jane's relative

DUMFRIES Academy’s social subjects faculty has hosted distinguished guests relating to the school’s involvement with the Jane Haining Project.

Jane Haining was a former student of the academy who later became matron at the School for Jewish Girls in Budapest in the 1930s. After Nazi occupation in the Second World War, she was arrested in 1944 after refusing to leave her charges and later died in Auschwitz Birkenau Death Camp in 1944.

Jane is regarded as the only Scottish person to die in Auschwitz, and her story is one of courage and bravery.

Dumfries Academy and Woodfarm High School in Thornliebank are two schools leading some new education materials on Jane Haining that will become available to schools throughout Scotland. Former PT social subjects at Dumfries Academy Mr McGair is now the Jane Haining project officer and is behind the development of new teaching materials.

Jane’s niece Deidre McDowall travelled from Derry to see students; with her on her visit were the Provost of Renfew and Mark Fergusson (UNISON representative). The two plan to create a short educational film on Jane Haining and wished to see work of the S2 students, a few were even interviewed along with Miss Chalk.
