Dozens of tributes have been left on the pavement near the spot where ten-year-old Michael Wolfe died on Monday afternoon.
He was involved in an accident at about 3.50 pm with a tractor, driven by a 58-year-old man from the Carlisle area. It happened on the A7 at the north end of the high street.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and an air ambulance was called out but later stood down.
Michael’s heartbroken family have released a tribute to him. It reads: “Mikey had a heart as big as the moon and a smile that would melt your heart.
“Mikey loved One Direction and going to the seaside, but the one thing he loved the best was winding his sisters and brother up. He was a master at this.
“Mikey will be missed by us and everyone who knew him.”
They added: “Thank you to Cumbria Police, Longtown Fire Brigade, and all the people of Longtown.”
The family are being supported by specially trained police officers.
Anyone who witnessed the collision, which happened before 3.50 pm, is asked to call Cumbria Police on 101 and ask for North Roads Policing Unit.
