Joint patrols are being carried out along the lower (Border) River Esk by officers from the Environment Agency and Annan District Salmon Fisheries Board.
It follows increased illegal activity in the area, where four anglers have been caught in the last two weeks.
A Fisheries operations officer said: “Further illegal activity will lead to more serious enforcement action being taken.
“By carrying out these patrols and preventing illegal fishing, the Environment Agency aims to protect salmon and sea trout that are on a return migration back to the rivers where they were born, to successfully spawn.”
Szandy Vezer, Fisheries operations team leader, added: “Licence evasion is unfair on anglers enjoying the sport legally, and could cause harm to fish stocks and the local environment.”
