Bomb squad called to Burnswark

EXPLOSIONS were heard near Ecclefechan on Tuesday afternoon as bomb disposal experts dealt with three old WWII mortars.

The unexploded mortar rounds were discovered by archaeologists digging at Burnswark.
Writing on their Facebook page, The Burnswark Project team said: “Day 8 at The Burnswark Project and what a day. Derek, Martin and Sandy unearthed some unexploded WWII mortar rounds. Unfortunately, at this point detecting stopped, the bombs were carefully moved to a safe area, and the police and the bomb squad were called.”
Sergeant Steven Wilson, based at Annan Police, confirmed they were contacted after the discovery and secured the site until controlled explosions were carried out by the bomb disposal squad from Edinburgh.
Meanwhile, archaeologists have now found over 50 Roman sling bullets at the 3000 year old hill fort, which has Iron Age and Roman origins.
Team member Sharon McKee said: “It’s an impressive total that matches those in the National Museum and Dumfries Museum.”
Other finds over the past week include prehistoric pottery, pieces of burnt bone, a stone ballista ball and a practice round from a WWII tank.
The project is holding an open day on site this Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm.
