Silver medal for steak pie made in Annan

AN ANNAN butcher’s steak pie is among the best in the South West of Scotland.

PERFECT PIES . . . David Scott, centre, of R Johnstone and Sons, collects the silver steak pie award from Quality Meat Scotland’s Graeme Sharp and William Sword’s David Mooney

R Johnstone and Sons scooped a silver award at the recent Scottish Craft Butchers Awards in recognition of their tasty traditional pie.
The regional championship at the 2015 Scottish Craft Butchers Steak Pie Evaluation was won by John D Owen and Son of Newton Stewart, while T H Carson of Dalbeattie also earned a silver award.
More than 150 pies from across the country were tested for appearance, flavour, filling and appeal by a panel of experts, cooks and consumers at Perth College last month.
Laurent Vernet, head of marketing for Quality Meat Scotland, which runs the Scotch Butchers Club, sponsors of the Steak Pie Evaluation, said: “Scotland’s beef is world-renowned thanks to its outstanding quality and exceptional taste.
“It’s also an extremely versatile product which can be used to make fantastic modern recipes as well as high quality products such as steak pie.”

He added: “These awards offer a fantastic opportunity to see the energy, enthusiasm and skill our butchers have. Their commitment to producing top quality beef products points to a bright future for the industry.”
