Tree lined boulevard plan for n-plant site

Mark Grieves, of landscape architects Gillespies, presented a masterplan scenario
outlining how the 190-hectare site could be developed into a business park.
Noting that the land would be most suitable for industrial development and distribution and storage, with likely sectors including energy, forest products and transport/logistics, he outlined that development could start as early as 2028.
Mr Grieves said: “We have examined the development opportunities at Chapelcross,
carried out market analysis and undertook an economic baseline study.
“Despite its rural location it is well connected and near to the M74 corridor and is the principal gateway to Scotland.”
Mr Grieves added that the site could have a major impact on economic activity and employment in the area, and is keen to explore multiple uses rather than just one industry.
Outlining that the proposed design would incorporate a public realm of service roads,
boulevards and secondary streets, he added: “We can’t be prescriptive about the uses of the site at this stage. It’s a complex and challenging task in taking Chapelcross forward and we need to recognise aspirations, which are going to change over time, and we have no idea what’s going to happen down the road.
“In terms of trying to attract investment, we want to generate activity and attract businesses so aspirations should not be to plonk random employment uses on the site.”
