Million pound Moffat

TWO big events in Moffat have helped bring an estimated £2.5 million in to the area this year.

The Eden Festival, held at Raehills Meadow in June, brought in a reported £1.5 million and the International Sheep Dog Trials, held at Courance, was estimated to have generated a further £1 million thanks to the event’s reported 10,000 guests.

A spokeswoman for the Eden Festival said: “We are pleased to share that this year’s festival alone brought over £1.5million to the local area, with almost 8000 at the festival over the weekend.

“Well done everyone and thank you for being a part of it.” She added: “Eden Festival is a not-for-profit community led event organised by a swarthy team of young adults, old adults, teens, grandparents, aunties, uncles and salty sea dogs fresh off the Solway coastline.

“At the heart of the event is the desire to create something unique and fantastic in the area that benefits the whole community, as well as its visitors.”

Both events received help from Dumfries and Galloway Major Festivals and Events Strategy.

Councillor Colin Smyth, the local authority’s events champion, said: “The council’s targeted investment since we adopted the Major Festivals and Events Strategy in November 2013 is developing for our region a rich seam of nationally and internationally significant festivals and events, that are sustainable for the foreseeable future.

“These events add to our quality of life and help agencies such as VisitScotland successfully market South West Scotland.”
