A Lockerbie resident has been left scratching his head over the council’s decision to erect a bench backing on to a scenic view and instead facing a ten foot hedge.
Denis Turner, of Hayrigg, is confused why the bench has been erected on the narrowest part of Dalton Road, Lockerbie, and on the brow of a steep hill.
He said: “A few weeks ago the council arrived and put a bench on the side of the road. “It was placed facing across the road looking straight onto a ten foot hedge.”
He added: “I don’t think anyone will use it unless they have eyes in the back of their head. I haven’t seen anyone use it to date.”
Mr Turner pointed out it is in a ‘dangerous’ position, just two feet from the road, adding: “A bus and a tractor collided a couple of months ago exactly where the bench has been placed.
“I certainly would not be happy sitting on this bench.” Responding, a Dumfries and Galloway Council spokeswoman explained the bench had been placed there at the request of an elderly lady who often walks this road.
She said: “It is acknowledged that this is a busy road, which is why the bench is placed back from the verge.
“An inspection was carried out and it was decided that this was the safest place possible.
“The purpose of the bench is not to admire the view, but rather as a place of rest and it is facing forward to allow easy access to walkers.”
