Police are investigating the suspicious blaze and say it could have been worse but for the quick action of the householder.
The resident discovered the bins on fire outside the property in Young Avenue at 11.45 pm. The flames were extinguished and although the bins were damaged, no other damage was caused to the house.
Constable Fiona Sword said: “The consequences of this act could have been catastrophic had the householder not been alerted by the smell of burning plastic and taken quick action. We are keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the area around this time and who may have see or heard anything suspicious.
“In particular, we are keen to speak to a female who was walking a small white terrier dog in the area and may have seen those responsible.”
