Roan’s Dairy is the brainchild of Stuart Roan, of Barnbarroch Farm near Dalbeattie, along with his brother Steven and their wives Aylett and Tracey.
Stuart had the idea many years ago but never had the time to develop it.
But earlier this year, after seeing yet another crash in the milk price, he decided that it was the right time to focus on his dream of processing their own milk and selling it direct to the customer.
Spotting a gap in the market, Stuart said: “You can buy free range eggs but no one locally was selling free range milk.
“Our system is set up that our cows are free to spend the day in the lush grass fields.”
The family pulled out all the stops to launch their new free range milk, branded ‘Fresher than the Udders’, at Colvend Farmers’ Market last week.
And the public response has so far been positive with high demand locally.
Tracey said: “Already a number of local businesses are keen to support Roan’s Dairy and stock milk that supports the local dairy industry.
“We have been overwhelmed with the support from the local community and customers who have been so enthusiastic to buy their locally produced free range milk. We have also been really delighted with the social media feedback from customers.”
Together they hope to drive the business forward, particularly when the dairy industry is going through such turbulent times.
Aylett added: “We are really keen to grow our product range but want to focus on ensuring we get our milk on the shelves in local shops first.”
They are currently stocked across Dumfries and have plans to move into Annandale and Eskdale.
