Amanda shortlisted for training award

A FORMER nursery cook who retrained as a childcare practitioner is in the running for a prestigious education and training award.

Amanda Bowden, who works at Treasure Island nursery in Castle Douglas, has been short-listed for Training Candidate of the Year at the 2015 Scottish Qualifications Authority Star Awards.
The SQA Star Awards are unique, recognising both the individuals who work towards and the organisations that deliver SQA qualifications; rewarding those that have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to learning.
Mandy, from Buittle, joined Treasure Island in 2012 as the nursery cook.
And she has gone on to study for a level 3 SQA SVQ in childcare after impressing her employers with the rapport she developed with the children, encouraging them to take in interest in how food is prepared and involving them in every stage of the food preparation process.
Mandy’s employers saw that she had a particular affinity for working with children who required some extra help and was encouraged to apply for a position working closely with a child with additional support needs.
Mandy has been invited to join other finalists at a glittering ceremony at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh on Friday 20 November for a night of celebration.
