Auld Stars are back

FORMER Mids players are getting back together this weekend to raise money for Yorkhill Children’s Charity.

Ex-manager Ally Sloan has assembled a group of past Mids players, or ‘Auld Stars’, to play against a Mids reunion side, made up of players from the successful youth side from the year 2000.

The then under 15s were coached by Kevin Key and Kenny Handley and they will be assisted by player Stephen Anderson who has been busy tracing and getting in touch with the lads from that era.

Mids secretary George Trudt said: “We have always wanted to do a fundraiser for Yorkhill Children’s Charity since Ally Sloan’s daughter, Libby, was cared for there a few years ago when she became seriously ill.

“It was difficult to arrange the match then because Mids didn’t have a home and we were playing out of Galabank. “Myself and the late Ian McDowall said that once we were back playing our games in Lockerbie we would arrange a fundraiser for Yorkhill.”

He added: “We thought the timing for this was now as good as any, given the local fundraising activities currently taking place following the care given by this excellent hospital to Maisie, daughter of locals Kevin Cowan and Fiona Henderson.”

Promising everyone a good match, George said: “Ally reckons that his experienced side will be too good for the younger 30-year-olds, although Stephen thinks it will be a close match but his team will have the legs to last the full 90 minutes.

“In the event of a tie at 90 minutes the match will be settled by kicks from the penalty mark.”

Three match officials from Carluke have volunteered their services on the day.

Sponsor sheets have been out for some time now and donation buckets will also be doing the rounds on match day.

■ The match takes place at the New King Edward 3G pitch this Sunday with a 2 pm kick off.
