No go for curling roundabout plan

CALLS to transform Lockerbie into a curling town have met a dead end.

Following David Murdoch, Claire Hamilton and Anna Sloan’s Winter Olympics triumph last year, there was an outcry from locals to honour the Olympic medalists.

Plans were mooted to see curling stones become a permanent fixture in the town with both roundabouts transformed in honour of the athletes.

The idea was first raised18 months ago, but it failed to be picked up by Dumfries and Galloway Council.

And this week Annandale North Councillor Stephen Thompson said: “Grim news from the director of planning and environment, the B7076 roundabouts at the entrance to Lockerbie aren’t currently being considered for any maintenance works to tidy up the areas, despite ward councillors raising this at recent meetings.

“Any improvements will have to be considered against budget availability, which is the all too familiar answer.

“However, the northern roundabout had sustained some accident damage and remedial works are planned, although when this will be carried out has not been confirmed, so we are still pushing for this.”
