The 76-year-old was sleeping in her bedroom when she was woken by two intruders.
After tying up the shaken senior citizen, the two men, who had their heads covered, searched the house at East Cluden.
They then made their escape from the property with what detectives say is ‘a significant’ haul of jewellery and cash.
The pensioner later managed to release herself before seeking help from neighbours.
Police Scotland have launched a large-scale investigation and have been carrying out door-to-door enquiries in the village.
They are trying to establish if anyone saw anything suspicious at or around the time of the incident — about five minutes past midnight.
The two suspects, who were wearing dark clothing, are described as white, well spoken, possibly with English accents and aged between 30 and 40.
Detective Chief Inspector Colin Burnie, who is leading the enquiry, has located a mobile police office in the village.
He said: “Although unharmed, this was a very distressing experience for this elderly lady and it is important that we trace the men responsible as soon as possible.
“These men need to be apprehended as they have preyed upon a vulnerable lady within her own home.
“We are conducting door to door enquiries and have deployed specialist resources, including the dog branch, to assist with ongoing enquiries.”
Detective Chief Inspector Burnie, who described the crime as ‘despicable’, reassured local people that such incidents were rare in the region and that there would be a visibly high police presence in the area.
He added: “Local residents are encouraged to speak to these officers about any information they may have.”
Anyone who can help is asked to contact police on the non-emergency 101 telephone number or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
