Callum spreads the piping message

A LOCKERBIE piper who has performed in front of Royalty and a member of the Beatles is inspiring the next generation of young musicians.

ScottishPower Pipe Band member Callum Moffat, 23, is teaching young people the art of piping.

Callum recently gained a BA Honours in Scottish music from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and has been performing at an international level with the ScottishPower Pipe Band for the past four years.

His pipe band, one of the top six pipe bands in the world, compete around the world and have even performed for the likes of Paul McCartney and The Queen.

As well as performing on stage, education remains at the heart of the band and Callum and his band mates are determined to share their passion with young people across the country.

Callum said: “I’m incredibly fortunate to be part of the ScottishPower Pipe Band, not only does it allow me to play on an international stage but I get to play alongside hugely talented and internationally respected pipers.

“My fellow pipers and I are passionate about teaching and it’s encouraging to know the ScottishPower Foundation continuously strives to educate and support the next generation of pipers.”

Piping has recently grown in popularity amongst the young people of Dumfries and Galloway. Since establishing his programme in August, Callum has already seen his class role double in size, to an average of 20 pupils per lesson, many of whom are girls.

As well as learning to play an iconic musical instrument, Callum has noticed his pupils developing greater confidence, self-discipline and a sense of community.

Trustee and executive officer of the ScottishPower Foundation Ann Loughrey added: “We are delighted to know that the support provided by the ScottishPower Foundation has allowed the ScottishPower Pipe Band to sustain its international success and also pass on its knowledge and skill to a new generation of musicians.

“The ScottishPower Foundation is committed to promoting both culture and education across the UK and the Pipe Band and the hard work of its members really epitomises this commitment.”
