Jackie nears £50k goal with zip wire challenge

A CANCER struck mum turned fundraising superstar is less than £2000 away from reaching her £50,000 fundraising goal.

Mum-of-three Jackie Armstrong, 47, found out last week that her 2015 charity zip slide across the Nith event raised £20,000 for Maggie’s Cancer Caring.

Jackie said: “I would just like to say a massive thank you to everyone who took part in the zip wire and who sponsored us and a special thanks to Hullabaloo for catering and my friend Gillian Kevans for standing in the rain handing out certificates and for all who helped out on the day.”

Lockerbie native Jackie has previously raised £28,000 for the charity who offer free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their families and friends.

Jackie, who was first diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago, fought the disease with the help of the Edinburgh-based Maggie’s hub but was unfortunately diagnosed again earlier this year.

Since first being diagnosed in 2010 she has raised £48,000 — just £2000 off her target. New granny Jackie plans to celebrate her mammoth achievement by enjoying her first Christmas with grandaughter, Ellie, next week.

And Christmas 2015 has been made extra special following good news from the hospital.

Jackie said: “My cancer is going fine, I recently found out I have no further tumours or growths on tumours which is good news.”

But the granny does not plan to take too much time off from fundraising and her mind is already swirling with ideas for next year with a 1950s night likely on the cards as well as another zip slide across the Dumfries river.

Jackie hopes to hit her £50,000 target soon and celebrate with close friends and family. She said: “I have become such a fund-raising addict and I would feel tempted to try and reach £75,000 after hitting the big 5-0.

“However, I don’t really judge my efforts in terms of how much money is raised, to be honest — I judge it by how many people get to receive the same support as I have from Maggie’s.”
