A fond farewell

SAY goodbye to the geese at WWT Caerlaverock this weekend.

The three-day festival will celebrate the population of around 40,000 barnacle geese who spend their winter at the wetlands every year before they fly back to their summer home in Svalbard, Norway.

To mark the occasion, a series of events will take place at the nature reserve to mark the departure of the wintering wildfowl and welcome the arrival of spring.

Events will include a bird watching breakfast, a dusk flight with a hot drink, a guided walk and an opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at the work going on at WWT Caerlaverock.

Rosie Siverns, operations manager, at WWT Caerlaverock, said: “While it might not seem like a dream winter destination for many of us, compared to the Arctic Circle where these barnacle geese spend the rest of the year, Dumfries is the ideal location offering warmer temperatures, food and safety.

“We know many people enjoy coming here to see the barnacle geese. The Goodbye to the Geese festival is an opportunity to join us in celebrating and learning more about them.”
