Actress marks Ukrainian Day

A UKRAINIAN actress who fled to Langholm after war broke out in her home country celebrated Ukraine Independence Day on Wednesday in the Muckle Toon.

To celebrate her freedom and nationality, Veronika Zolotoverka went along to the town’s Hugh Macdiarmid Memorial with a Ukraine flag.

She stood there draped in the colours of her homeland in solidarity with the late Langholm-born poet and political figure, who was a founding member of the National Party of Scotland, forerunner to the modern Scottish National Party.

Veronika, 32, spent the last six years working as a professional theatre director and performer at a theatre in Severodonetsk, Ukraine.

Since then, the theatre has been obliterated by Russian shelling and Veronika escaped to Dumfriesshire alongside her mother when Russians occupied the region in May.
