A LOCKERBIE lass has been crowned Scottish Student Social Worker of the Year 2015.

Known for having one of the brightest smiles in Lockerbie, Katie Armstrong’s grin hasn’t wavered since her win was announced on Tuesday night.

The 21-year-old was shortlisted for the accolade last month and journeyed up to Edinburgh with boyfriend Bruce Redpath on Tuesday night for the swanky awards ceremony.

Katie, a fourth year BA Hons social work student at the University of West of Scotland, was over the moon to win.

She said: “I honestly am still in so much shock. I’d set myself up for a loss so I wouldn’t be disappointed, but then I won.”

Katie had previously spoken about how social work was both rewarding yet challenging and explained that at times her confidence in her career choice had wavered.

But this win has given her the boost she needs and she now looks forward to graduating this year and having a long and rewarding career in social work.

Looking to the future, she jokingly added: “My manager from placement was there, at the awards, and I turned around at the end and said ‘can I have a job now?’”
