Ambulance staff suffer attacks on duty

ATTACKS on ambulance staff across the region have been denounced as “completely unacceptable”.

It comes after shocking stats revealed that emergency service personnel have been assaulted 30 times locally over the last five years.

This included being spat at, kicked and suffering verbal assaults whilst the staff were on duty.

Last year, there were eight attacks which included examples of threats to staff with a knife/bottle.

Reacting to the stats obtained by Legal Expert, a Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: “Our staff are having to deal with incidents nearly every single day which is completely unacceptable.

“They have the right to carry out their work helping patients and saving lives without fear of assault or abuse.

“We also strongly condemn the abuse our hard-working call handlers face on a daily basis.

“We understand calling 999 can be a stressful time during emergencies, but abusing our staff will not be tolerated and we will continue to work with Police Scotland to take action against those who do assault or abuse our hard-working staff.”
