AN 85-year-old Wigtownshire woman who has raised £60,000 for MacMillan Cancer Support has been named Scotland’s Inspirational Champion of the Year.
Mavis Paterson, of Auchenmalg, was a winner at this week’s Cycling Champion of The Year Awards in Edinburgh, organised by Cycling Scotland.
The judges picked ‘Granny Mave’, as she is affectionately known locally, after hearing how she captured people’s hearts across the country with a 1000-mile fundraising cycle ride in May.
The award also recognises her commitment to cycling.
A delighted Mavis said: “I am so happy to learn that I’ve been given this award. I certainly did not expect it and wish to thank all who voted for me.
“Cycling is so important to me and even when I’m not travelling these great distances, I am out on my bike every single day, taking in the beautiful scenery in my corner of Scotland.”
An awards spokesperson said: “The awards recognise the individuals and organisations that have made a lasting impression on cycling in Scotland in the last year. The judging panel were particularly impressed by the strength of nominations, highlighting the impact that winners have had in their communities.
“We are thrilled to be able to celebrate each of these worthy award winners, who have each worked incredibly hard to support cycling in their local communities and to champion the many benefits that cycling can bring.”
