Anvils in back-to-back cup defeats

The Anvils welcomed East of Scotland Premier Division side Hill of Beath to Raydale on Saturday, with the winner having the chance to reach the quarter-final stage of the coveted South Challenge Cup.

The visitors started strongly and John Smith slotted home six minutes in.

However, the Black and Whites answered back 13 minutes later when Iain Anderson found the net following a scramble inside the box.

After this, the Lowland League side started to put pressure on their East of Scotland opponents but they were unable to find the net as the half ended 1-1.

A lively start from the visitors in the second period allowed them to re-gain the lead through Jordan Tosh.

And Calum Adamson made sure of progression for the Fife side late on as he added a third.

Gretna was the venue again on Wednesday night as Vinnie Parker’s men welcomed Stirling University for a first round Lowland League Cup tie under the lights.

Two Finn Moffett goals inside the opening 20 minutes put the students 2-0 up but Liam Short pulled one back for the Black and Whites on 35 minutes.

On the hour mark Stirling restored their two goal cushion through Liam Trotter.

Anderson slotted home a late penalty but Gretna were unable to go on and find an equaliser to force extra time.

The Black and Whites return to league duty this Saturday with a trip to Shielfield Park to play Berwick Rangers.
