PARENTAL satisfaction with schools in Dumfries and Galloway has dropped hugely since 2007, according to new figures.
Recent statistics released part of the Scottish Household Survey: Satisfaction with Schools 2023, shows that between 2007/08 and 2023 adult satisfaction with schools in Dumfries and Galloway fell from 87 per cent to 54 per cent.
This is the lowest adult rate of school satisfaction for the whole of Scotland.
The news follows recent council reports that primary pupils in the region were falling the rest of Scotland in attainment levels.
Commenting, South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth said: “After years of SNP mismanagement, our education system is suffering and pupils in Dumfries and Galloway are paying the price.
“These damning survey results show people are quickly losing confidence in the Scottish Government’s ability to run our schools.
“Our region is showing the lowest satisfaction rates in our schools among adults and sadly, this won’t come as much of a surprise to parents and carers.”
He added: “It’s little wonder satisfaction has taken a nosedive at a time when exam results are plummeting, attainment among primary pupils is falling behind other parts of Scotland and reports of violence in classrooms are on the increase. Many of the recent inspection reports on local schools have been deeply worrying. Despite the best efforts of hard working school staff and pupils, they are being badly let down by decision makers and there does seem to be a sense of denial within the region.
“We need a change in direction to restore our world-class education system and give every child the opportunities they deserve.”
