Army explode beach bomb

A WORLD War two bomb was exploded on the beach at Powfoot this morning.

It was discovered last night by a man with a metal detector and reported to the emergency services.

Coastguards rushed to the scene and sealed off the beach overnight and this morning the army’s EOD team from Edinburgh and police were there to carry out a controlled explosion just before 10 am.

Annan senior coastguard Stewart Braden said: “It’s a WWII device, probably a smoke bomb and it was still live.

“We had a team here overnight and have made a 100 metre cordon to keep everyone safe.”

And he stressed that anyone finding anything similar should not touch it and call the coastguard via 999 as soon as possible.
