Behind the scenes at museum relaunch

STORIES of love, romance, runaways and family are at the heart of the new Gretna Green Experience.

Opening to visitors today, it tells the history of the 260-year-old border wedding site, the people who run it and those who have passed over its anvil.

The original museum and marriage rooms have been redesigned with artefacts carefully curated and new audio elements introduced.

Visitors can see the historic areas in which couples have been tying the knot for more than two centuries and peruse old marriage registers, farming items and even a wedding dress.

At its heart, the centre also now features a new immersive area, with a 360 degree film that brings the past to life.

It has been a three year labour of love for the Gretna Green Group and experience makers Mather and Co.

Mather managing director Sarah Clarke said: “People who visit this place can now experience that incredible history brought to life for the next generation of elopers and romantics.”
