Births, deaths and marriages

CORONAVIRUS was not the biggest cause of death in the region in the final quarter of last year.

Between October and December 2020, there were 28 virus related deaths in Dumfries and Galloway – out of 542 overall.

Of the final total, 143 were due to cancer; 148 were linked to heart issues; 57 to dementia and Alzheimer’s; 46 were respiratory reasons.

And in 16 instances, accidents ended up fatal.

The regional pictured echoed the national situation and Julie Ramsay, statistician at National Records of Scotland (NRS), said: “After the significantly high number of deaths we saw in April to June last year, the number then returned to broadly average levels in July to September.

“As the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic developed, deaths increased again in October to December.”

Meanwhile, NRS also this week released figures for happier occasions.

During the three month period, there were 282 babies born, of which 148 were boys and 134 were girls.

Sadly, there was also a stillbirth.

In terms of marriages, 1364 took place, with 1313 between members of the opposite sex and 51 same sex. In addition, there were 51 civil partnerships held in the region.

All the tying of the knots took place under restrictions.
