Black Lives Matter protest held

A PEACEFUL protest took place on Sunday afternoon in Dumfries in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

The death of George Floyd – an African-American man who died while a white police officer knelt on his neck – has sparked outrage around the world and led to demonstrations.

Sunday’s protest at the Midsteeple was organised by Amber Wildwood, Chloe Cameron-Carter, Corrie Widdowson and Justin Hyslop.

Community speaking, reading of the names of victims and an eight minute 42 second kneel in silence – to honour the memory of George Floyd and all of other victims of police brutality – Was held.

Hundreds have shown their support for the protest and Amber stated the number is “growing continuously”.

She added: “The response initially on a Facebook page was disgusting, with the post having to be removed shortly after it was posted due to a barrage of insults, racial abuse and remarks.

“However since creating the event on Facebook we have had an overwhelming response, going from just a handful of us to over 100 people showing support overnight and this number is growing continuously.

“Locals have offered to lend us sound systems and speakerphones for the event and our fire services have passed on very kind words of support and in general we haven’t had much negativity since that initial post.”
