And the police response to the incident is also being looked after, it emerged today.
The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) has begun an investigation.
A spokesman for the PIRC said: “The Police Investigations & Review Commissioner has been instructed by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) to carry out an independent investigation after the body of a 52-year-old woman was discovered at a residential address in Dumfries on Saturday 20 February 2016.
“The investigation will focus on the initial police response in the preceding hours leading up to the incident following a report of concern about the welfare of the occupant at the property.
“A report on the Commissioner’s findings will be submitted to the COPFS in due course.”
Responding, assistant chief constable Mark Williams this morning said: “Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.
“Local officers discovered the body in the early hours of Saturday. Police Scotland and the Crown Office have referred the incident to PIRC and there is now a live investigation underway. As such, we are limited in what we can say at this time.
“A post mortem examination will take place in due course to establish the exact cause of death, however at this time it is not being treated is suspicious.”
